I’ve always loved finding simple ways to make the everyday things around our home feel a little more thoughtful.
This felt organizer started with a very ordinary problem: I wanted a small catchall for the little things that always seem to collect on a dresser or nightstand—sunglasses, jewelry, keys and all the odds and ends that never quite have a home.
Instead of buying something new, I decided to make my own.
The Design
I wanted the organizer to feel minimal and useful, but still have a little warmth to it. I chose a thick gray felt for the body because it holds its shape while still feeling soft and relaxed, then added leather cording at the corners for a subtle contrast in texture. The original project uses just a few simple materials: felt, scissors, a hole punch and leather cording.
The design itself came from experimenting with how a flat piece of felt could be folded into a dimensional form with as little construction as possible. Rather than sewing the entire piece together, the corners are gathered and tied, which gives the organizer its shape while keeping the design simple.
It’s one of those projects that reminds me that making something for your home doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes a few materials and an afternoon of experimenting are enough.
